Many of us want to know the reference for a passage of scripture we, sometimes partially, remember.
One of ScriptureViewer's early users treasured the Search function for being able to find a desired passage--perhaps in part because she had a great memory for the exact words to use.
Many of us, though, struggle to get the exact words, and therefore experience some frustration trying to find our remembered passage. ScriptureViewer now includes a built-in Thesaurus and four different options for its use. Most differences between American and English spellings, while different specific words, are considered close synonyms. Similarly, some proper names are spelled differently among versions -- again many are mapped as close synonyms.
Requesting a Search starts by clicking the Search button on the Open/Utils tab, or by selecting Search from the popup menu displayed after clicking on the hand pointing right. ScriptureViewer has two search panels, Simple shown above and Advanced. Consult HELP to explore use of Advanced, it generally isn't required. If the advanced panel is displayed, click on the top-row button labelled Simple. On the panel, enter the word(s) you want to find in the top text box. The 'Complete' checkbox indicates whether or not ScriptureViewer should help on your spelling by providing the first available word ending as you type (when you have at least two letters). The word ending is highlighted. You may use the up/down keyboard arrows to walk among words, or tab or right arrow to accept the current ending, or just keep typing. When you're done typing, look to make sure auto-complete hasn't left the next proposal (hit delete to remove the proprosed additional letters). Click the checkboxes of the book(s) to search, or All to set/clear all book checkboxes. If a book title is grayed out, it means it isn't currently open for search. You can go back and Open the missing books, then return to the search screen. Set your search range, should the collection of words be within a verse, or anywhere within a chapter. Further, select whether to use synonyms, and how broadly. Your options are: None--don't use synonyms at all; Close--accept the word in any of it's various forms; Normal--accept the word in it's various forms or any of the synonyms from the Thesaurus; Broad--accept the word in it's various forms, or any direct synonyms, or any synonyms of the various forms. The Search button is enabled when you have a word and at least one book checked. Clicking the Search button will initiate the search. Results will be displayed in a new tab. |
